How to Know Which Scenario You're In
There's no single right answer for which Milwaukee tools a service crew should carry. I know that because I spent three years and roughly $180,000 in purchase orders figuring it out the hard way.
Quick background: I'm the office administrator for a 40-person facilities maintenance company in Milwaukee. I manage all our tool and supply ordering—about $60,000 a year, roughly 60–80 orders, across eight vendors. I took over purchasing in 2020, and I report to both operations and finance. Everything I'd read about tool buying said "M18 Fuel or go home." Conventional wisdom treats the 12V line as the lighter, weaker alternative. In practice, for light service work—door hardware, furniture assembly, POS installs, electrical cover plates—the M12 Fuel 1/4" hex impact driver handled 80% of our daily fastening. That's not an exaggeration. I started tracking it because I didn't believe it myself.
The Milwaukee 12V impact isn't trying to be a high-torque wrench. It's a compact driver that fits between a desk and a wall, runs all day on a Red Lithium battery, and doesn't wear out the tech's wrist. Why Quality Matters More Than the Price Tag

- How far does a tech travel between jobs? If they're driving 50-mile loops, the inflator and a charged battery matter more than a second charger.
- What's the budget for the first vehicle? Under $2,000 for tools? Buy a used van from the Milwaukee listings and keep the tool list minimal. Over $3,000? PACKOUT and an M12/M18 combo are justified.
There's no universal right answer. But there's a right answer for your situation. The worst thing you can do is copy someone else's setup and hope it fits. Ask the questions, pick a scenario, and keep the first order small enough that one mistake won't sink the quarter.
